Introduction
IBM Accelerate is an unpaid, virtual learning experience that offers high potential undergraduate students the opportunity to become equipped with the knowledge and career readiness they need for future consideration for opportunities within the technology industry.

You will be aligned to one of the six core tracks based on your major, skills and interests. The application will ask you to rank your top two track preferences, so please familiarize yourself with each track prior to applying.

If you are accepted into the program, you are committing to attend the Accelerate sessions for three hours per week: Mondays 7-8 PM ET and Wednesdays 6-8 PM ET between June 5th - July 31st, 2023. Attendance is tracked and required to receive an IBM badge at the end of the program.

Participants who complete the program may be considered for IBM internship opportunities. Please note, IBM does not provide visa sponsorship for internship positions now or in the future. Participation does not imply current employment nor guarantee future employment with IBM.

  • Client Engineering & Technical Sales

    • What students will learn in your track: We will help you grow your technical and interpersonal skills to prepare you for a future career as a trusted client advisor and problem-solver.

    • This track is designed for someone interested in: Helping companies succeed and grow by providing them with innovative technical solutions backed by IBM's proven AI, Cloud, and hardware technologies. Our Client Engineering and Technical Sales teams leverage their deep technical knowledge to advise and co-create with clients who are tackling some of the world's most challenging and important problems.

    • Preferred/recommended majors : Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Data Science, Design, Electrical Engineering, Information Technology

  • Consulting

    • What students will learn in your track: We will help you build technical and interpersonal skills as you gain an understanding of how consultants help organizations better predict, automate, secure, and modernize their business.

    • This track is designed for someone interested in: using their unique lived experience, coupled with continuous learning and application of business, data science, design, or development skills and knowledge to strategize, design, implement, and execute solutions to solve complex “global scale” problems with some of the world’s largest organizations.

    • Preferred/recommended majors: Computer Science, Information Technology, or related majors; Data Science, Analytics, Applied Mathematics, or related majors; Design majors; or Business, Finance, Accounting, Operations, or related majors

  • Design

    • The design track is for someone interested in: learning and gaining valuable experience in the ideation, research, execution, and presentation of design projects, as well as leaning into the ethical duties of designers to think about the unintended consequences of their designs, who might be left out of the process, and how to consider power structures and biases designers bring to what they create as design practitioners.

    • Participants in our track will learn: How to infuse design excellence and quality user experience with what it means to be a designer

      • The foundations of UX design, visual design, and design research while understanding how to design with intent

      • How to apply design skills to emerging technologies

    • Practitioners in the field of design come from a variety of educational backgrounds and acquired skillsets; it is part of what makes the profession vibrant and engaging. This program is applicable for broadening the knowledge and skills for students already in design programs as well as providing a foundation for students in adjacent disciplines/majors.   • Hardware Development

    • What students will learn in your track: Students will grow their understanding of various opportunities within Hardware Development ranging from analog design, digital logic, FPGA, and microprocessor design, to functional verification, performance modeling, and physical layout and routing. Also, students will learn overall system design, ranging from mechanical, thermal, power and power integrity, signal integrity, card engineering, printed circuit boards and quantum control hardware and embedded firmware. Additionally, students will learn how system performance targets are achieved through collaboration between hardware and software roles, including hardware design, programming languages, benchmarks and certain client and cloud workloads. Students will even discover disciplines that create the design automation and simulation tools used by engineers and specialists to simulate, create and analyze sophisticated digital, analog, card and mechanical designs. Students will hear from IBMers who develop, analyze and test various materials, designs, connections, and memory technologies for use in IBM's systems.

    • This track is designed for someone interested in: Understanding the large array of opportunities from many majors in the computer hardware area and where they might find rewarding career opportunities to tackle some of the world's most challenging and important problems related to hardware development: Systems, Storage, AI, Cloud, Quantum and other hardware and software technologies.

    • Preferred/recommended majors: Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Material Science, Physics, Computer Science, Information Technology, Applied Mathematics

  • Marketing & Communications

    • What students will learn in your track: We will help students build the foundational skills needed to be creative, data-driven Marketing and Communications practitioners that tell stories that resonate with audiences and drive business results.

    • This track is designed for someone interested in Broadening their perspective on what it means to be part of a leading tech marketing company; that is passionate about delivering meaningful experiences to clients through innovative technical solutions. Through this program, you will experience how IBM Marketing & Communications brings the power of an open hybrid cloud and AI strategy to life for our clients and partners around the world.

    • Preferred/recommended majors: Marketing, Communications, Marketing Research, Digital Marketing, Market Strategy, Analytics, Statistics, Advertising, Consumer Behavior, Public Relations, Journalism, Economics, Business Administration, Design, or similar

  • Software Development

    • What students will learn in your track: From IBM's most innovative software developers, Technical Leaders, and Master Inventors, you will grow your programming skills while enhancing your programming competencies and understanding of coding assessment platforms. You will expand your ability to work in agile teams, think critically, problem solve and sharpen your coding logic skills.

    • This track is designed for someone interested in: Data structures and algorithms, front end and back end development fundamentals, versioning, application security, project management, coding assessment platforms, GitHub, the software development lifecycle (SDLC), and coding logic. Additional topics include Javascript, React, styling, security, and Cloud Native Development.

    • Preferred/recommended majors : Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Information Technology, Information Systems, Information Management & Technology




Required Technical and Professional Expertise

  • Participants must be currently enrolled in a post-secondary education institute (i.e. college or university) and actively pursuing an undergraduate degree.

  • Participants must supply their own computer/laptop with internet access for use throughout the program.

  • Participation is open to all majors and areas of study, although participants are encouraged to have an interest in STEM and technology.


Preferred Technical and Professional Expertise

  • This program is open to all undergraduate students, but the curriculum is primarily developed for Sophomores that will be rising Juniors in the summer (specifically with December 2024 - June 2025 graduation dates). All candidates who meet this criteria may apply.

  • This program is designed to enable students that come from underrepresented backgrounds in the technology industry. Those who self-identify as Black, Hispanic/Latinx and Native American are especially encouraged to apply.

Location Statement
Supplemental 1 employees may be eligible for paid holidays, paid sick time and Employee Stock Purchase Plan.

The compensation range for this position is based on a full-time schedule. The salary will vary depending on your job-related skills, experience and location. Pay increment and frequency of pay will be in accordance with employment classification and applicable laws. For part time roles, your compensation will be adjusted to reflect your hours.
